Emmy Nominated Actor, Friend of the Planet, ShopToEarth Next Step Speaker

ShopToEarth likes good company and “Mr. Eco” himself, Ed Begley, will be joining STE during their annual Next Step Event, January 2010. Best known as Dr. Victor Ehrlich on the hit television show St. Elsewhere, Begley’s long career as an environmental activist threatens to outshine his onscreen accomplishments.

Since 1970, Ed Begley has been striving to live harmoniously with the Earth. At that time, he became a vegan, recycled and got his first electric car - a Taylor-Dunn golf cart. Today, Begley owns a home powered entirely by solar and wind, rides a bicycle or bus rather than drive his current electric car – a Toyota RAV4 EV- and has his own line of eco-friendly household cleaners.

Begley’s commitment to saving the planet has no boundaries. In November of 2008, he gave Thanksgiving with his family to participate in a promotion backed by the Hunter Fan Company which required him to travel to five cities in five days to generate awareness about saving money on energy bills. He and his wife, Rachelle Carson, currently have their own hit reality show on HGTV called ‘Living with Ed’ which gives viewers an inside look at the challenges of living an eco-friendly life.

Considered an environmental leader in Hollywood, Ed Begley has served on the boards of several associations and foundations dedicated to environmental education and implementation of solutions that help the planet. The list includes the Environmental Media Association, the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, The American Oceans Campaign and Tree People.

His work in the environmental community has earned him a number of awards from such noteworthy eco-groups as the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council and The Coalition for Clean Air. Ed Begley is also a member of several worthwhile organizations such as the Friends of the Earth, Thoreau Institute and the Earth Communications Office.

Poll Shows How Women Shop Online

Chic clicks are turning women into digital fashionistas who hunt down deals shopping online rather than wearing themselves out driving from store to store. A poll of 1000 of these smart shoppers revealed ten tidbits of information that every ShopToEarth online shopping business can use to position their business for success.

1. A whopping 87% of women used coupons at least some of the time

2. 63% say they wait until they get a coupon or the item goes on sale before making a purchase

3. 79% of women use the internet to get items they can’t find in their local stores

4. Before making a purchase 83% look for feedback about an item and 78% read user reviews

5. 14% of shoppers 18-34 tap their social networks for advice by posting pictures of products on social media outlets

6. 1 in 10 women used their cell phones to find information about a product while in the store

7. 29% splurged and made a purchase online to cheer up about the recession

8. Favorite things to buy online: 41% clothes, 31% books, 18% household items and 16% electronics

9. Women won’t buy just anything: 25% said they would not purchase food or groceries, 16% declined to buy clothes, 14% refused to buy shoes and 13% turned their nose up at buy appliances online

10. 37% of women shopped online in the last year had a bad experience

ShopToEarth Likes This! Green Monday to Break Online Shopping Records

According to comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni, Green Monday, one of the heaviest online shopping days of the holiday season, holds the potential to produce the first recorded $900 million in online sales in holiday shopping history.

“Although this most recent week of holiday shopping did not produce the first $900 million spending day, we saw above average growth rates including a strong end to the week,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “Monday, December 14 – otherwise known as Green Monday – is likely to produce our heaviest online spending total for the season and represents our best opportunity to finally surpass that elusive $900 million spending threshold.”

Gian goes on to say that shoppers will continue to hit the virtual malls all this week before returning to the brick and mortar stores for last minute items.

“For ShopToEarn ecommerce business owners, this means now is the best time to share your online shopping business to friends and family members,” states Dan Swiniarski, ShopToEarth President.

comScore, who has been measuring online shopping since 2001 also shared the good news that online spending has increased 3% over last year. Currently, Cyber Monday – the Monday after Black Friday – holds the record high this year at $887 million in online sales. Now that’s a lot of socks.

Shoppers Get Deals, Save More with Free Shipping, Early Promos

Online shopping is going to remain a bright spot in retail this holiday season, according to the 2009 eHoliday Study by shop.org.

Over 80% of online retailers are expecting their sales to increase over last year’s total, and more than one-fourth of online shoppers plan to spend a larger portion of their holiday budget online this year.

“In a year where every penny counts, many people will start their holiday shopping online to find deals, search customer reviews to select products, and get gift ideas,” said Phil Rist, Executive Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, BIGresearch. “The benefits of online shopping far outweigh the drawbacks, as far as most shoppers are concerned.”

Online Retailers to Emphasize Free Shipping, Social Media this Holiday Season
–Companies Try to Entice Shoppers with Earlier Promotions–

10/2009The economy is not only impacting shoppers, it’s affecting online retailers, too. According to results of Shop.org’s eHoliday Study, conducted by BIGresearch, shoppers will see changes in retail marketing and promotions this holiday season in response to economic uncertainty.

With an understanding that many of today’s shoppers use Facebook and Twitter regularly, and because these tools are more cost-effective than traditional advertising, 47.1 percent of retailers surveyed will be increasing their use of social media this holiday season. More than half of retailers said they have added or improved their Facebook page (60.3%) and Twitter pages (58.7%) this year, while two-thirds (65.6%) have added or enhanced blogs and RSS feeds. In addition, to provide consumers with an extra incentive to start shopping, one-third of retailers (34.3%) say they will offer holiday deals earlier this year.

As another sign of the times, free shipping offers will abound this holiday season. Four out of five online retailers (79.4%) will offer free shipping with conditions* at some point during the holiday season, while more than half (57.4%) also plan to offer free shipping without conditions. More than one-third (35.7%) said their budgets for free shipping are higher than last year, and nearly as many (30.0%) said free shipping offers will start earlier than a year ago.

“Retailers know that times are tough so they have created promotions and incentives to help Americans save money this holiday season,” said Scott Silverman, Executive Director of Shop.org. “From free shipping to Facebook, online retailers are combining new initiatives with tried-and-true tactics to make their companies stand out.”

Online retailers are also compensating for the economy by making operational changes to help them protect their profits. According to the survey, 41.4 percent of retailers have scaled back on inventory levels and 22.9 percent have hired fewer people in their stores.

While online growth is expected to slow this holiday season, it remains a bright spot in retail. According to the survey, 45.8 percent of online retailers expect their holiday sales to increase at least 15 percent over last year, while one-third (33.9%) expect sales to grow up to 14 percent. As a testament to the economy and the maturity of online retail, just one in five online retailers (20.3%) expects sales to be flat or decline.

In addition to a strong focus on sales and free shipping, many online retailers have revamped their websites this holiday season to make it easier for people to shop. According to the survey, many retailers have added or revamped their sites’ shopping cart (45.2%), search capabilities (44.3%), suggested items (42.9%), customer ratings and reviews (40.6%), and featured sale pages (37.1%).

Largely due to the convenience of the web, more than one-fourth of online shoppers (26.7%) said they plan to spend a larger portion of their holiday budget online this year. Reasons behind why people will spend more online range from the ability to shop at all hours of the day (41.9%) to shoppers feeling it is easier to compare prices (34.0%) to Americans’ insatiable appetite for free shipping (33.1%). Others said they will spend more online because it’s simply more convenient for them (32.4%), they don’t want to fight crowds in stores (24.9%) or because it’s easier to find items (16.7%).

The small percentage of people (5.7%) who plan to spend less of their holiday budget online said that they’ll pull back due to expensive shipping charges (22.8%), because they like to see or handle items before they buy (12.5%) or because they prefer a store experience (10.8%). A fraction of shoppers said they hesitated to shop online due to concerns about security (1.1%), credit card theft (0.6%), privacy (0.1%) or concerns about retailers tracking online activity (0.1%).

With online retailers diversifying payment options, customers have more ways than ever to pay for holiday gifts. According to the survey, two-thirds of shoppers (67.3%) will use a credit card for some online purchases this holiday season, though one-third will also use a debit card (35.6%) and PayPal (33.9%) for purchases. In addition, 11.5 percent of shoppers plan to use a gift card or gift certificate to pay for holiday items online this year.

About the Study
The eHoliday Study, now in its eighth year, provides an authoritative snapshot of the holiday activities of both large and small online retailers, many of which have been in business for at least ten years, and also includes the sentiments of online holiday shoppers. The Study, conducted by BIGresearch for Shop.org, surveyed 2,623 consumers from September 23 - October 6, 2009 and 70 online retailers from September 14 - October 6, 2009.

After eight years as a trial lawyer, Dawn decided it was time to dance to the beat of her own drum. Last night, Shop To Earn advisory board member, Lil Roberts, hosted the second weekly call on The Art of the Introduction and Mastering Objections. The goal of this call is to help Shop To Earn associates improve their business skills. As a master of the business herself, Lil Roberts divulges her secrets to conference call attendees and offers insightful tips for introducing ShopToEarn and overcoming objections.

Last nights call mostly covered objections. Guest speaker, Shop To Earn Advisory Board Member Dawn Connelly joined Lil and offered her professional litigator skills as an example for overcoming objections. In her professional career, Dawn has been involved with litigation cases with Phillip Morris, McDonald’s and Kraft. The call focused on the following objections:

Is Shop To Earn a Pyramid?
I don’t know anyone
I don’t have time
I don’t have money

Lil and Dawn reminded attendees to keep in mind that objections equal engagement. If someone has an objection before he or she has seen the tour call then you have told them too much. This is something you can learn from and help advance your business.

Lil and Dawn shared the three steps below to overcoming objections:

Ask Why (the person may say the objection is one thing but when you ask them why you may find out it is really something else)
Remove the obstacle if it applies (if their objection is about money, ask if they had the money would this be the business for them. Then, focus on helping them figure out how to find the money)
Walk the person through their objection (as discussed in number two)

Did you catch this week’s shopping webinar? If not, you are truly missing a fantastic shopping call from our experienced and fun, eco shoppers!

This week, the call highlighted shopping tips, saving tips, and very insightful information on how to use your new Shop To Earn and Shop To Earth site.

Lil Roberts and Rachel Weekly explained the benefits of why you should shop through your site with the main reason being: TO SAVE MONEY! There are numerous reasons to shop through your ecoCommerce site but saving money tends to be the favorite! Extra cash is extra cash, for everyone.

The shopping experts shared how to save $50 per person-per month. They also discussed product modifications, like buying a water filter instead of plastic water bottles and presented the monetary savings this reflects (ahhemm, in addition to the environmental savings!).

They gave tips on how to start thinking outside the box. For example, finding great clothing stores, discount stores, and gift stores. It’s all about planning ahead and using a calendar. Lil and Rachel suggest to look at upcoming holidays, anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, baby showers, and kids parties and think about what you're going to need for all of these.

Save time and money with your Shop To Earn/Shop To Earth site; get rewards from cash back, enjoy gas savings, time savings, and promote environmental awareness through eco shopping!

Other shopping tips included:

Register with your favorite stores: sign up for their email list to receive coupons and discounts for online shoppers. Start with stores you know and then expand by looking at one new store a week.
Keep coupon codes in a folder on your computer. Save paper, don’t print.
Make sure you enable cookies. Cookies equal tracking – and you want to make sure ShopToEarn can track your shopping. If you walk away from the computer when shopping, make sure you close and reopen your Shop To Earn site when you come back, search the store you were previously shopping, then complete your purchase. Stores will save the items in your shopping cart if you are registered and logged in. This ensures your cash back.

Last night’s Social Media Happy Hour informed representatives how to best use Twitter as it relates to Shop To Earn, including the basics of Twitter, re-tweets (RT), direct messages (DM), and public @replies. The webinar instructed participants to use Twitter with devices on so associates get real time updates sent to their cell phones.

As always, it is important to follow ShopToEarn’s business guidelines when using Twitter. Associates must understand the compliance rules about using the Shop To Earn logo, name, or contents, and also the use of third party trademarks. All of this information is stated in the Website Owner and Business Builder Agreements located in the company’s Virtual Office.

Here’s a look at some of the questions that were asked during the webinar, which we were unable to get to before time ran out.

How can I add a short link to my tweet?
The best way to have a link fit in the 140-character limit of a tweet is to use a Web site to shorten the URL. Our favorite site to use is bit.ly, which can shorten lengthy URLs to as little as 10 characters. Once shortened, Twitter will automatically turn any URL into a clickable link for your followers.

How can I send and receive tweets from my cell phone?
Tweeting from your phone is simple and easy. To receive messages, simply select the option to turn devices on when you chose to follow someone. You will need to add and verify your cell phone number in the devices tab under the main Twitter settings. Once your phone has been added, it is just as easy to begin sending messages from your phone. All you need to do is send a text message that is less than 140 characters to 40404 and Twitter will update your status. You can also download Twitter applications if you have a BlackBerry or iPhone.

What is a hash tag?
An exciting component of Twitter is the ability to index words for users to see all that is being said about a particular topic. A hash tag (#) is what Twitter uses for indexing. Simply type # before anything you would like to be indexed in your tweet, for example type #ShopToEarn or #ShopToEarth, and your post will display as a search result for those words.

What is a twibe?
ShopToEarn now has a Twibe on Twitter. That means anyone’s tweets including the keywords #ShopToEarn, #ShopToEarth or Shop To Earn will automatically feed into our Twibe. Joining the Twibe allows users to easily find and communicate with other ShopToEarn associates in the Twibe. To join the ShopToEarn Twibe visit: http://www.twibes.com/group/shoptoearn.

USA Today Reports Direct Sales Place to Be

If there is a sweet spot in this economy, ShopToEarn is in it. An article this month in USA Today outlines how the direct sales industry continues to grow during our current economic times. Partially due to the loss of jobs, but also attributed to the fun and freedom, many Americans are joining direct sales and affiliate marketing companies, like Shop To Earn to supplement their income.

The article reports, that in 2007, the most recent year available, the direct sales industry generated $30.8 billion in U.S. sales. The companies exemplified in the article include Avon, Isagenix, Silpada Designs, and Mary Kay, all of which are direct sales companies, where the representative sells a specific product, collects commission, and gets incentives for recruiting other sellers. ShopToEarth Seminar: FTL Recap: RockBands!

For those who missed out on the ShopToEarn Shortcut to Success in Fort Lauderdale last weekend, here is a quick recap.

The weekend was alive with excitement as ShopToEarn’s VP of Sales Joe Locke and Director of ShopToEarth Seminars Gregg Amerman shared strategies on how to build your online shopping business most effectively. The theme of the training was overcoming objections, including dealing with questions about negative Google search results. Hi everyone! Here are some more questions that we'd like to answer from the comments section of the ShopToEarn blog.

Q. Which companies are offering gift cards with cash back?
A. Most companies do not offer cash back on gift card purchases. However, on the left side of your ShopToEarn home page we have created a product category titled “Gift Cards.” This category represents all of the retailers that pay a percentage back on Gift Cards. In addition, these stores can also be seen in the retailer drop down menu, noted by a “GC” after the retailer’s name. (Ex. Restaurant.com GC).

Gift cards are also obtainable by clicking on the “Gifts.com Gift Cards” item in the dropdown menu. There are 111 Companies that offer gift cards at 6 percent cash back. Vendors range from Starbucks to CVS to Macy’s to Pottery Barn. Check your Web site for the complete list. GiftCertificates.com, is another option in the pull down menu that also pays back 3 percent on online Gift Certificates.

Q. Are members taxed on others shopping through the ShopToEarth side?
A. No, only the person purchasing a product can be charged tax on ShopToEarth items.

Q. Why isn't ShopToEarn's contact info listed on the website?
A. All of ShopToEarn’s corporate information, including ShopToEarn’s phone number, is listed on the contact us page of the website. ShopToEarn is incorporated out of Las Vegas, Nevada and the corporate business license is registered under Shop2Earn, Inc.

So you’ve heard about Shop to Earn or you’ve just joined the company, but you still have questions. Don’t worry; you’re not the only one wondering about e-commerce and it’s benefits! Often, it takes potential associates two tour calls and a training call to get acquainted with the Shop To Earn e-commerce and online shopping business model.

To help you learn more about ShopToEarn and ShopToEarth, here are five frequently asked questions:

1. What are the main differences between “Business Builders,” “Website Owners,” and “Brokers”?

Business Builders are primarily responsible for referring other’s to Shop To Earn through their Web portal. They receive training bonuses for signing up associates through their website.
Website Owners maintain their own Shop To Earn web portal and may refer others to shop on their website. Owners receive cash back on all online shopping done through their website.
Brokers are both Website Owners and Business Builders, getting the best of both worlds with cash back on all shopping and training bonuses when they refer new associates.

2. I want to sign up for ShopToEarn, but I don’t know anyone else who is involved. What should I do?

Ask around! Someone you know is likely already signed up with us, they just might not be talking about it as much as they should. Otherwise, contact us by posting a comment on the blog and we will forward your information to the appropriate people.

3. What does my sign-up fee go towards?

When you pay your sign up fee, you are essentially paying for the “behind the scenes” cost of running your own online shopping business. Your fee goes towards technical support for your personal Web site, maintaining the accounting in your “back office” that tracks all of your income and purchases made through your site, and the costs associated with providing you support such as training calls.

4. How does ShopToEarn track my purchases? How can I be sure you know what is purchased through my Web site?

We track your purchases with proprietary software through your back office. You can view all purchases made through your site in your back office, and if you ever happen to find something missing, submit a support ticket immediately and we will correct the problem right away.

5. I can’t get anyone else to join! What am I doing wrong?

Nothing! Some people are not receptive to this idea because it is new and different from what they’ve seen before. Our suggestion to you is to participate in the training calls and ShopToEarth seminars to get tips on how to recruit.

Shop To Earn announces the Ring of Honor by recognizing the first 10 inductees, which were pinned at the Leadership Conference in January.

To enter the Ring of Honor, a Shop To Earn Business Builder must earn at least $250,000 in 12 consecutive months and must be in good standing with the company.

All Ring of Honor inductees receive a custom white gold pin in the shape of an earth that contains the following representative jewels: sapphire for ocean, emerald for land, and diamonds surrounding the earth’s circumference.

Sapphire Club
Shop To Earn associates that earned $250,000 in 12 consecutive months were inducted into the Sapphire Club. The sapphire stones represent the blue water that makes up 70 percent of the Earth’s surface.

Who said today’s youth isn’t ambitious? Sixteen-year old Wendi Oppenheim is following in her Shop to Earn father’s ambitious footsteps. Attorney Roy Oppenheim is one of Shoptoearn.net’s Top 10 producer’s and his daughter Wendi is leading a community service revolution in South Florida with The Opp-Guide. Nease Rocks the World of Online Shopping

Holiday shopping is a hassle. Sure it’s fun searching for the perfect gift, but who really wants to battle traffic, crowds and screaming kids?

Nease High School has found a way around that little snag. The school partnered with Shop to Earn, a web portal which allows shoppers to give back to the school while shopping for the things they need.

"The website was something that was brought to me by a parent," said Aletha Dresback, International Baccalaureate coordinator at Nease. "She knew that with all of the financial cutbacks the school had this past year the schools need to try new ways of raising money."

That parent was Loribeth Visconti. Visconti, whose son attends Nease, said she first got wind of Shop to Earn through a neighbor.

"She was active in my Relay for Life team," said Visconti. "We were trying to figure out what to do for fund-raising and thought this would be perfect."

"I thought, the high schools are always getting gypped with money," she said. "Teenagers spend their own money on things. This has a lot of the stores teens shop at."

Dresback said the idea was initially something the school wanted to do for the International Baccalaureate program, but they felt that the entire school could benefit from it as well.

"We established www.neaserocks.com," she said. "I did almost all of my Christmas shopping online this year. Each store has a percentage that they give back to the owner of the site, in this case Nease."

Shop to Earn was founded in 2006 by Pat Welsh. The mission statement of the company is to empower people to choose a lifestyle of better health and increased wealth. It seeks to do this through alliances with "green" companies and paying a percentage of cash back through the portal in the hopes of creating a increased wave of green awareness.

According to Sarah Van Elzen, interactive producer for the Buyer Group who handles publicity for Shop to Earn, said the site has seen a tremendous amount of growth in the last year.

"There are currently 70,000 members and Shop to Earn hopes to expand to 100,000 by the end of the year," Van Elzen said.

Shop to Earn has links to popular women’s and men’s clothing stores like Banana Republic, Aeropostale, Bluefly.com, Converse and Eddie Bauer. Each store gives a specific percentage of the purchase back to the owner of the portal, for example Banana Republic gives two to four percent back to Nease if an item is purchased through Neaserocks.com. In addition to apparel, sites such as Apple, Best Buy and Office Depot are also available to shop through.

Visconti said she purchased the domain name for Nease and they will have the portal for a year. Any money generated through the site goes into an account for the school.

"The challenge is getting people to take that step to log onto the site [before they do their online shopping]," she said. "Nease is a really good school for that. They will catch on quick."

Visconti said Neaserocks.com has been active for about 4 weeks. Dresback said sales have been slow, but the so far the portal has raised about $100 for the school.

Q. Are you considering opening up the business to Canada?
A. Not currently, but we will keep you posted on future happenings!

Q. What’s the situation with Wal-mart?
A. Wal-mart is restructuring its affiliate program and as a result we are currently not working with them on the Shop To Earn site.

Q. Can I set up a Flash Web site for my personal broker account?
A. Any online presence other than your official Shop To Earn page must be in compliance with your business agreement, which states “using the name of ShopToEarn, ShopToEarth, STE, Shop2Earn, Shop2Earth, Shop To Earn, or Shop To Earth in any other way that your specific web address (including on Web sites and in corporate names) violates the terms and conditions of this agreement and a member account that violates any of the terms and conditions of this agreement may be terminated at the company’s discretion.”

Q. I am interested in becoming a Shop To Earth vendor, what should I do?
A. In the first quarter of 2009, there will be a PDF form available on the Shop To Earn site to fill out for consideration as a ShopToEarth vendor. Keep an eye out!
